Many people disapproved of Ms. Dolezal’s choices and behavior, believing that she betrayed and tricked the people and organizations that trusted her.
Others took her side. Rihanna said, “I think she was a bit of a hero, because she kind of flipped on society a little bit. Is it such a horrible thing that she pretended to be black? Black is a great thing, and I think she legit changed people’s perspective a bit and woke people up.”
If the goal is to just be you, who exactly are you? We are categorized and judged: black, white, Latino, citizen, immigrant, pretty, ugly. Do these labels accurately define us? Or, are we something that cannot be named or categorized?
However you stand on this issue, and I would love to hear your thoughts, I believe that the most important objective is to be as authentic as we can be, with ourselves and with everyone else. I also believe that in our superficial world, expressing authenticity is a work in progress.
